Welcome to the Frieda River Project

The Frieda River Project, located on the border of West Sepik (Sandaun) and East Sepik provinces, in Papua New Guinea, is one of the largest undeveloped copper and gold deposits in the Asia-Pacific region.

Located approximately 200 kilometres from the northern coastline and 70 kilometres from the navigable Sepik River, the project is managed by the global copper producer, Xstrata Copper, and owned in a joint venture between Xstrata Frieda River Limited (81.82%) and Highlands Pacific Limited (18.18%).

Xstrata Copper delivered a Feasibility Study and 2012 Study Program Report in December 2012, identifying a potential operation with an estimated capital cost of $5.6 billion, and an estimated average annual production profile of 204,000 tonnes of copper and 305,000 ounces of gold, over a 20-year mine life.
