But for physiotherapist Cathy Pius, holistic transformation happens in the weeks and months that follow in the slow, determined journey of rehabilitation, recovery and renewed hope.<\/p>\n<p>Based at Modilon General Hospital in Madang, Cathy works under the Madang Provincial Health Authority (MaPHA), delivering rehabilitation services to patients recovering from general surgery, trauma, burns, and complex plastic and reconstructive procedures.<\/p>\n<p>Her role extends beyond bedside care. She also supervises physiotherapy students and junior staff, helping build a stronger, more skilled health workforce for Papua New Guinea.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cI don\u2019t think everyone realises how critical physiotherapy is,\u201d<\/em> she says. <em>\u201cSurgery repairs the structure, but rehabilitation is what restores function helping people return to their families, their work and their communities.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><strong>A journey shaped by service<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Cathy\u2019s professional journey has been deeply influenced by her longstanding involvement with Interplast, an international organisation delivering reconstructive surgery and specialist training across Asia and the Pacific regions.<\/p>\n<p>She was first introduced to the program in 2014 during her early training years at Modilon Hospital.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cAt the time, Interplast was looking for local health workers who could provide ongoing care, keep in touch with the visiting team and support patients after surgery,\u201d<\/em> she recalls<em>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em> \u201cI took on that role for rehabilitation in Madang, and from there my involvement grew.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Over the years, Cathy worked closely with visiting hand therapists, receiving mentoring and specialist training.<\/p>\n<p>When Interplast expanded its outreach to other provinces, including East Sepik, she was invited to join the team most recently supporting a two\u2011week specialist visit to Wewak.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Growing complexity, growing capacity<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>During the Wewak visit, Cathy observed a clear shift in the scale and complexity of cases being treated.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cWe\u2019re seeing more patients, a greater variety of conditions, and much more complex injuries,\u201d<\/em> she explains.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cCases are carefully screened by local surgeons, and those selected require both surgical expertise and intensive rehabilitation.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The expanded caseload has also meant larger, more diverse teams including local and international surgeons, anaesthetists, nurses and therapists working side by side.<\/p>\n<p>Importantly, programs are now being extended to allow more time for postsurgical care and hands-on training of local staff.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cThis makes a huge difference,\u201d<\/em> Cathy says<em>. \u201cIt means patients get better follow\u2011up care, and local physiotherapists gain practical skills they can continue using long after the visiting teams have left.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Why specialist outreach matters<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Like Madang, East Sepik Province sees a high number of congenital conditions, trauma cases and burn injuries, often caused by bush knife wounds or domestic accidents.<\/p>\n<p>When these injuries affect hands or limbs, the consequences can be life\u2011altering.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cWithout specialist surgery and rehabilitation, people can be left with permanent deformity or disability,\u201d <\/em>Cathy explains.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cThat affects everything their ability to work, to care for themselves, to participate in daily life.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>While local medical teams work tirelessly with limited resources, Cathy says specialist outreach programs like Interplast are essential not only for patient care, but for building long\u2011term clinical capacity.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1166\" style=\"width: 276px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1166\" class=\"wp-image-1166\" src=\"https:\/\/www.friedariver.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/2026_04_01_Comms_FeatureStory_Rebuilding-Lives-One-Movement-at-a-Time_Approved-2-225x300.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"266\" height=\"355\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.friedariver.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/2026_04_01_Comms_FeatureStory_Rebuilding-Lives-One-Movement-at-a-Time_Approved-2-225x300.jpeg 225w, https:\/\/www.friedariver.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/2026_04_01_Comms_FeatureStory_Rebuilding-Lives-One-Movement-at-a-Time_Approved-2-768x1024.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/www.friedariver.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/2026_04_01_Comms_FeatureStory_Rebuilding-Lives-One-Movement-at-a-Time_Approved-2-9x12.jpeg 9w, https:\/\/www.friedariver.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/2026_04_01_Comms_FeatureStory_Rebuilding-Lives-One-Movement-at-a-Time_Approved-2.jpeg 810w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 266px) 100vw, 266px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-1166\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><strong>Hands on training in action:<\/strong> <em>Cathy Pius treating a patient and training Wewak physio Herrimina Sarsoruo.<\/em><\/p><\/div>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h3><strong>Rehabilitation: where healing continues<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Cathy\u2019s work with post\u2011surgical patients begins even before an operation takes place. Pre\u2011operative sessions focus on education, emotional preparation and physical conditioning.<\/p>\n<p>After surgery, her attention turns to pain management, swelling reduction, mobility restoration and carefully guided exercises.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cFor hand injuries, we start with protecting the repair making sure splints are comfortable, swelling is<\/em> <em>controlled, and movement is introduced safely<\/em>,\u201d she explains.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cAs healing progresses, we gradually increase activity until the patient can return to real\u2011life tasks.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The goal is always function whether it\u2019s holding a pen, returning to gardening, caring for a baby, or earning a living.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cSometimes the improvement seems small,\u201d<\/em> Cathy says. <em>\u201cBut for the patient, it can mean everything.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><strong>The human challenge behind recovery<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Despite successful surgery, many patients struggle to complete their rehabilitation. Long distances to hospital, financial pressures, emotional stress, and limited family support can all become barriers.<\/p>\n<p>Some patients believe surgery alone is enough only to return later with new complications.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cTo overcome this, we take a holistic approach,\u201d<\/em> Cathy explains. <em>\u201cWe educate patients, encourage early safe movement, and involve families as much as possible. <\/em><em>When patients understand the process and see progress, their confidence grows.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Seeing patients complete the journey and come back with success stories remains the most rewarding part of her work.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Building skills, strengthening systems<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>For Cathy, one of Interplast\u2019s greatest impacts lies in skills transfer. Each outreach visit includes mentoring, teaching sessions and on-the-job training creating ripple effects across the health system.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cI was once a trainee myself,\u201d <\/em>she says. <em>\u201cNow I assist my mentors to train others, and I pass that knowledge on to students and junior colleagues.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Back at Modilon Hospital, Cathy applies these skills daily, helping ensure patients in Madang and beyond can access specialist\u2011level care closer to home.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><strong>A quiet pride in service<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Asked what being part of Interplast means to her as a Papua New Guinean health worker, Cathy pauses.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cIt\u2019s a sense of humble pride,\u201d<\/em> she says. <em>\u201cKnowing that I\u2019m helping rebuild the lives of my own people, restoring function, dignity and hope.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>And for her patients, that hope often begins with a simple movement a hand opening, a step forward, a life restarting.<\/p>\n<p>Cathy\u2019s recent participation in the Wewak outreach was made possible through the support of Frieda River Limited (FRL), whose partnership with Interplast continues to strengthen access to specialist healthcare services in Papua New Guinea.<\/p>\n<p>Through this collaboration, FRL supported Cathy\u2019s travel, meals and hotel accommodation to contribute her skills to the program and provide critical postsurgical rehabilitation to patients.<\/p>\n<p>By investing in local health professionals, FRL is helping ensure that specialist knowledge and care extend well beyond a single outreach visit building local capacity and delivering lasting benefits to communities most in need.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In operating theatres, surgery can change a life in a matter of hours.
