In many parts of Papua New Guinea, access to specialised healthcare is not a straight road. It is more like a river in the wet season-wide, unpredictable, and often impossible to cross.<\/p>\n

For some families, help exists but always on the other side. Like Daniel Seph, a load master with Frieda River Limited (FRL), that river stretched across nearly five years. And at the centre of that journey was his daughter, Danisha.<\/p>\n

A Beginning Marked by Uncertainty<\/strong><\/h5>\n

 <\/p>\n

When Danisha Seph was born on 3 March 2021 in Miko village, her arrival brought joy as every child does. But just three weeks later, that joy was met with concern.<\/p>\n

Doctors discovered that Danisha had been born with a congenital anorectal condition, affecting her ability to pass waste normally.<\/p>\n

For her parents, it was like being handed a map with a critical path missing. The destination, a healthy childhood was clear. But the way to get there was uncertain.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe was very small when we found out,\u201d<\/em> Daniel recalls. \u201cAt that time, everything was confusing.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Living With a Temporary Solution<\/strong><\/h5>\n

In those early months, doctors performed emergency procedures to help her body function. Over time, she underwent four surgeries – each one necessary, but none providing a complete solution.<\/p>\n

An opening on the side of her stomach allowed waste to pass. It kept her alive, but it was never meant to be permanent. It was, in many ways, like building a temporary bridge out of whatever materials are available, strong enough to hold for now, but never intended to last.<\/p>\n

Daily life became a careful routine.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was very difficult,\u201d<\/em> Daniel says. \u201cWhen we changed her, she would feel pain. Sometimes we had to use nappies because other ways were too hard.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

As Danisha grew older, so did the challenges. What worked for a baby became harder for a child and beyond the physical strain was the emotional weight of protecting her dignity.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe kept her close,\u201d<\/em> he says. \u201cSometimes we hid her. We didn\u2019t want others to see her condition.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Years of Waiting<\/strong><\/h5>\n

From Kunjingini Health Centre, they were referred to Boram Hospital in Wewak. From there, the pathway forward remained uncertain. They were told that specialised surgery was needed but it was not available locally.<\/p>\n

At one point, they were advised to travel as far as Kundiawa in Chimbu Province. But for Daniel and his wife, that option was like being told to cross that wide river without a canoe. They had no family there. No place to stay. And the cost was out of reach.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe were told doctors would come,\u201d<\/em> Daniel says. \u201cSo, we waited.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

When the Bridge Finally Arrives<\/strong><\/h5>\n

 <\/p>\n

In communities where services are limited, hope often arrives not gradually, but all at once.<\/p>\n

For Danisha, that moment came through the Wewak paediatric surgical mission, supported by partners including Frieda River Limited (FRL).<\/p>\n

Specialist doctors arrived bringing with them skills that had long been out of reach.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey did what other doctors could not do,\u201d<\/em> Daniel says. \u201cThey helped correct the way her body works.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

The surgery marked the first real step toward restoring what her body had been missing since birth creating a proper pathway so she could function more naturally.<\/p>\n

One could say the river was finally crossed.<\/p>\n

A Shared Reality<\/strong><\/h5>\n

 <\/p>\n

At the hospital, Daniel saw something that stayed with him. Others were waiting too.<\/p>\n

Teenagers. Young adults some as old as 18 or 19 living with the same condition.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe saw many people like our daughter,\u201d<\/em> he says. \u201cThey also thanked the company for bringing the doctors.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

In that moment, it became clear: this was not just one family\u2019s story. It was a reflection of a wider gap one that many people quietly live within.<\/p>\n

More Than a Mining Company<\/strong><\/h5>\n

 <\/p>\n

For FRL, the mission represents something deeper than corporate responsibility. Because in regions where infrastructure is still growing, the role of organisations extends beyond their core operations.<\/p>\n

Sometimes, it means stepping into the spaces where services have yet to fully reach. Sometimes, it means becoming part of the bridge.<\/p>\n

The Journey Continues<\/strong><\/h5>\n

Danisha\u2019s journey is not yet complete.<\/p>\n

At a recent review at Boram Hospital, doctors noted she is just one centimetre away from full correction, requiring further adjustment. Her stitches have since healed, and her care continues at home, morning and evening, just as the doctors have instructed.<\/p>\n

Her next review is scheduled soon, with hopes that a follow-up mission will allow surgeons to complete the final stage of her treatment.<\/p>\n

For her family, that next step matters deeply because they have come this far.<\/p>\n

A Future Within Reach<\/strong><\/h5>\n

 <\/p>\n

For the first time since her birth, Danisha\u2019s future is no longer defined by limitations.<\/p>\n

Instead, it is beginning to open like a path that was once blocked, now slowly clearing.<\/p>\n
